Misfits was my favorite science fiction comedy at one time, well, at least all the way to season 3. If you have not seen it in the states, it is because it is a British television show, on E4. If you look hard enough on the web, I am sure you can catch some episodes. The premise is about a group of young offenders sentenced to work in a community service program. While doing their community service, an electrical storm occurs, and zaps them. Next thing you know, they all obtain supernatural powers, and a bunch of weird shit happens. There are some really funny and dramatic moments throughout the seasons. Robert Sheehan plays a character named Nathan, and he pretty much carried the show until he left. Since it was the very inspiration for this photo shoot, and I love the characters on this show, allow me to present the results.

Prepping was fairly easy. I had my beautiful daughter Ericka assist me in playing the role of the misfit. She is already a misfit in her own right, but thats neither here nor there! So we began with ordering a prisoner outfit online. That is pretty much the main piece to the shoot. The next was location. We couldn’t fly overseas to Britain, so we found a nice little warehouse, or what they call them here in America, a garage.

No real effort went into actually replicating the outfit. At least not for this round. Maybe in a future shoot with this cosplay theme in mind, I may try and recreate the famous community payback outfit. For now, let’s use our imagination.

Let’s talk set up here. I used over head lighting with a beauty dish straight down, while two soft boxes faced opposites sides of the subject. I wanted to get the sense of a slightly visible background. Just enough to see the spotlight hitting the concrete floor. It really brought out the orange in the prison jumpsuit. Ericka got into the meanness of her character. I couldn’t resist laughing during some of her theatrics. She’s never seen the show, so I had to give her some direction.

Look I have muscles! Apparently our young model could not stop staring at her biceps. What if she had super powers? What would that look like? In the Misfits show, sometimes the characters use their powers with malicious intent. I mean they have super powers, but they are not responsible individuals. Their powers are used often for their benefit, if anything they just use them to get out of trouble. Ericka here couldn’t hurt a fly, so I experimented with some colors.
