Nothing quite like a sunset in the beautiful town of Sedona, Arizona. I’d been to Cultural Park Trailhead many times. I flew in this area a few years back, but I had never take photos of models during a sunset. That changed today. What heat was I packing?
I woke up to a beautiful sunny sky as early as 630AM. Skipping a shower to go and enjoy a novelty breakfast at the local Miley’s restaurant. Finding a place to sit down, enjoy a cup of coffee, and eat some huevos rancheros for the second time in a row is difficult in a crowded town. You’re going to need a hearty breakfast though if you’re going to be in Sedona, because the whole town is nothing but non stop walking and hiking.
You’ll be able to catch a glimpse of hot air balloons most times. Nothing crazier than people jumping in a basket and letting the wind take them wherever it wants. Something much safer though is heading over to the Cultural Park Trailhead. It is a gem in and of itself without the touristic masses intruding in your view. You walk out here and you are practically all by yourself to enjoy the scenic goodness. Definitely a place for capturing that beautiful sunrise, and in this case, a wonderful end to an evening sunset.
From the Cultural Park Trailhead entrance you will find dirt roads for parking. As you step out to all of the Arizona rockiness, finding a good area for photography is a “take your pick” situation. It’s a beautiful golden hour before sunset. You’ll need to be fast, so travel with some light gear and set up quickly. In my bag for this shoot I carried just my Nikon D850 camera, one Profoto B10 Plus light on a stand, and I was able to move my subjects around easily to capture the natural light within the environment.
The Cultural Park Trailhead is found off of Arizona Route 89A, and during this time (6pm) it is mostly empty. I don’t understand why there weren’t more people out here enjoying the sunset, but I can tell you that this is a beautiful area to take photos in, or just enjoy a nice leisurely walk.
I just noticed Veronica has the same damn track suit as she was wearing during the White Sands photo shoot only this one is black. What, did they have a 2 for one sale at the local Kohls or something?
A cool breeze calms us down and we call it a night as the dark overtakes the town once more. The uptown area of Sedona (where all of the shopping takes place) has installed roundabouts now, and while the tourist drivers remain confused on how those actually work, the rest of us are happier on foot as we see the town improve upon its foundation.
