I walked outside this morning. The rain, the wind, and the chilling cold hit me hard. It was just last weekend when I took these photos for my friends out in Aubrey, Texas that it reminded me how hot it could get around here. Today, quite the opposite. If you managed to swing over the photography page of my website, you’ll see that I am now offering photo sessions in the local pumpkin patches for potential clients. The whole point of these types of sessions are to provide quality images in a short session as well as a quick turn time for the results. This past weekend was a hot day with not a single cloud in the sky. Summer did not want to leave, and the taste of pumpkin was lingering in the air. What I am trying to say is that the sun was probably melting the pumpkins.
So on to the photos. Enough complaining about the Texas heat which if you’re a native Texan, you just learn to deal with the dynamics of the weather. My trusted assistants and I prepared all this week by calling the local pumpkin patch farms to see who was cool with us taking lights and stands to the location for some mini sessions with our friends. We were pleasantly surprised to find that most of these places were totally cool with us coming out and as long as we weren’t monopolizing the set, it was fine for what we wanted to do.
Our setup for these shots were a 2×3 soft box and a couple of Profoto B10 studio lights. Having practiced some light patterns with haystacks in the recent weeks, it was pretty easy to set up and go with the individual shots. I think these turned out great despite not having a single cloud in the sky. Positioned to the right was the soft box at an angle pointing towards the subject, while on the far left we shot bare bulb with another Profoto B10. Our main camera was the Nikonn D850 with a 24-70mm Nikkor lens.
Heatstroke aside, the quick run and gun shots came out pretty good. I am a little disappointed that we didn’t have any clouds which in my opinion would have made these shots way better. Adapt and overcome as they say, but we have several weekends this month to continue to pursue the perfect pumpkin patch shots. I’ll be posting more as we shoot more photos in these beautiful setups throughout October. Stay tuned for some more photos, and if we are fortunate enough, more clouds.
