The beautiful skies of New Mexico’s Sandia Peak

Everywhere I look it seems I can’t escape the negative connotations of “drones”. News reports of deranged individuals shooting down an aircraft because of privacy concerns, or even over exuberant pilots performing dangerous maneuvers in restricted air space. I get it, this is new to everyone, and with all the risks involved, there is big news to report when it comes to concerns of abuse.

There are obvious causes for concern, but you also can’t lump everyone who pilots these aircraft into one category. For obvious reasons doing so makes great headlines, and so now you have this incredible misconception on the industry. I understand, I am a part of this whole mass hysteria whether I like it or not, but I refuse to be made an example of, so I remove myself from the negativity. I continue to create art, and I don’t mind showing it to the world. Most are genuinely curious about it all, and approach with a friendly attitude. I think once they understand it, the objective becomes clear, and it becomes no different than the day to day selfie. What I mean is that people complain about privacy, but there are cameras all around us, capturing our image on a daily. You’re screaming that it is your choice to snap your own photograph because you control your own destiny? Right. Well here is the thing. We live in the world where everyone is now a photographer, and honestly, your life isn’t that interesting to most people. So don’t worry, your secrets are safe.

I will play devil’s advocate and tell you that I can understand people’s concern. Airplanes fly over your head all the time. Google has your house on the map for everyone to look at, and some teenager is probably videoing you trip over your own feet, so they can publish the embarrassing results on YouTube for views and hits. The day you see a drone flying in close proximity to you and capturing your life’s most intimate moments, well, I will be right there with you in the protest, but the truth is, that is not how these things work.

The technology is readily available to everyone. Is this scary? No more scary than a gun being readily available to thug I guess. We license people for weapons you say? We also license drivers, but look at the stats on drunk drivers in your state and across America. This is just a ramble, because ultimately with technology of this type, you will get concerns that are warranted, and of course there should be issues that are properly addressed. I cringe when people ask me how much my “toy copter” costs. These UAV’s are not toys, but from the inexperienced, they do come across as such, and that is where the problem begins for some.

I travel and I photograph. I love taking photos, and sharing my experiences with others. It is the social media age, and this is very common. Seeing the beauty of the world is incredible when you can experience it through someone else’s eyes. In my travels I have been fortunate to capture what I think are beautiful images. New Mexico is a gem, and I am sure there will be scrutiny on some of these captures. It is quite alright, everyone can voice their opinion, but you have to admit, from the sky, these are quite beautiful.
