If I remember anything about 2014, it has to be the day I was graciously invited over to spend some time with artist Wenli Liu. I had the pleasure of watching her paint, and if you’ve seen Wenli’s art, then you know what a real treat this was. So many artists are very shy when it comes to painting in front of an audience, but not Wenli. She smiled her way through it all.
Upon meeting Wenli, she welcomed me into her home, and there, I was submerged into her own world which consisted of a cozy room dedicated to her work station of artistic ordinance. I was very impressed with her body of work. Every piece hung in a row on every wall, just waiting to be spoken for by art collectors with exquisite tastes and fat wallets. Well worth the cost when you take a look at the time and technique involved, which is usually about 2 weeks per piece, and there were so many to fall in love with. In the moment of awe, I was greeted by her daughter who was most definitely her best artistic creation yet.
Before we started with the photographs, I noticed Wenli did not have a hint of paint on her what so ever. This was Wenli the oil painter, and she needed that splash of paint to give her that messiness every artist has when working on a piece. She was definitely a good sport, if nothing else, and was more than happy to comply with my request. With blue streak across her face, she began to pose for the camera with such sincerity.
Wenli went to engineering school in China, but opted to become a journalist instead. While in her profession, she interviewed starving artists in China where the context of starving was literal. Still, she wanted to pursue her goal as an artist, even while having second thoughts. She nevertheless followed her dream, where she pursued a career as a graphic designer in San Francisco, California. A twist in her art career turned into abstract painting when she moved to Texas. She soon discovered more talents with her abilities to paint incredible images of people. Posting her results to social media websites, she received encouragement from her followers. This only motivated her to continue on improving towards that artistic avenue.
Like many artists out there, Wenli feels the need to grow, and over time her determination will help her achieve this level of artistry she desires. Balancing a home life with an artist life can be a major challenge. She has managed very well within the past few years, and it shows in her paintings. Wenli knows a painting is done when she feels the person is “calling” her. ” “You never feel the painting is perfect. There are always details you can improve on, and when you feel the emotion, you move on to the next one,” she says with much enthusiasm. With well over 50 artistic works, Wenli is an artist well beyond a level many of us could ever hope to achieve.
