I’m always trying to find new ways to tell a story. The day light fell fast, and we happened to come up on a beautiful lake hugged by some trees. With nightfall coming, I quickly set up my profoto kit to shoot some snaps with the night sky as the background.

With my modeling lights hitting their subject, the bugs quickly made the soft boxes their temporary home. It is summer time, so every blood sucking mosquito and insect with wings was out this evening. It’s alright, nothing a few sprays of repellent can’t fix.

I’ve never used this kit in the dark before. The challenge was trying to figure out what result I wanted. Did I want to shoot to highlight the subject, or did I want a nice balance of evening sky? I was hoping to catch some star twinkles this night, and so to add to my indecisiveness, I set up and started shooting.

This was very spontaneous, but we had a great time despite the infestation of starving insects buzzing around our ears. We then headed to downtown Fort Worth to check out the city night. To light these scenes I used a Westcott Ice Light and a tripod. I did not want to attract too much attention, and I was looking for something more punchy than the surrounding lights. Overall the results were nice, and this was definitely a great spontaneous shoot.

A very special thanks to my very own talented model, Ericka Moya. She looks killer sporting the red dress, black stompin-boots, and sea green nails.
