Who the hell is texting me? Oh, it’s Mike. The text reads out something like this. “Hey is this one of your friends or something?”. Wtf ya talking about Mike?? I stare into my phone screen as this unusual video makes it through. It is some guy on stage performing for a crowd of parents while wearing a mask, doing the wiggle wobble, and dropping some lyrics for the older generation of confused eyes.” I dont know this dude.” I responded, “but, maybe I should.”, I thought to myself. The story continues as Mike relays a message on my behalf to the masked man, the Resting Scary Face. I sought out to photograph this dude and his unique sense of showmanship. My whole life people have been telling me I do weird shit, that I am weird, and weird this and weird that. Shit please. Musician Resting Scary Face meets the normal fuckers of the world and is unfazed. I can’t imagine this guy performing for a bunch of parents and seemingly uninvited. He just shows up to the venue, says something like, Hey, you guys have mic and a stage, I wanna perform for you bitches. Nah. It sounds bad ass, but it isn’t what happened. Right Mike??? You see, Resting Scary Face had been invited to do an opener for this particular event, and with his signature mask, blood red shirt, and fire lyrics he reassured the crowd that you don’t need a chainsaw to cut shit up!
My homie Scary shows up to the photo studio in full on digs to get his photo session going. You know sometimes, I don’t really know what to expect from people who walk through that studio door, but honestly you couldn’t have asked for a nicer person. Very humble, courteous, and friendly, but Scary? Not even once. I think he should change his name to Friendly Face or some shit like that. Also, you wont believe what he does for a living. Of course I wont reveal it here, but I was a little surprised. One thing is for sure, the citizens of DFW can sleep soundly when Resting Scary Face is watching over the city.
So, what’s up with Scary? Well, he’s a musician that raps, sings, produces, records, and performs his music live. He recently released his new album, Luvvy Potions Uncursed of the Disenchanted this month online, and is full on promoting it with performances in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. His previous album Horror Drama is an ear treat. You just have to be open minded and have a listen for yourself to see if it fits into your playlists. It is definitely unique and somewhat similar to the music I have created in the past with the moniker of Space Insex.
In the background Horror Drama plays on while I set up my shots, pose Scary, and we discuss the many adventures of past , present, and future. Very minimal because you have to keep that mystery going about people. Knowing too much spoils all the intrigue artists can have. The question on everyone’s minds has to be why the mask? Why the whole Resting Scary Face persona? Well, every artist has their way of expressing themselves. Some might find it easier to put on a mask in order to do this. I dunno, listen to his album, and you might get a sense of what is going on. Either way, as an artist Mr. Scary was fun to photograph, easy to talk with, and his music unique to listen to. I definitely want to continue photographing interesting artists when I am in town, and perhaps I will photograph Mr. Scary in a different setting next time. You wont want to miss his shows, so make sure and Catch Resting Scary Face in a subterranean vessel near you!
