White Rapper.

Ever see that show? It was on VH1 I think a few years back. All these white rappers auditioned to be on the white rapper show and they headed to New York to battle it out for some cash, and a possible record deal. I don’t know all the details but that is enough to start this story. This is how I met 100 Proof.

Proof is in the pudding.

Lounging on a hot ass last day of summer when the rain finally takes a pause for us to shoot these damn photos. We had planned this for about a month before it finally calmed down enough to take these shots. Proof had contacted me one afternoon as a response to an email I had sent off as he was in search of a DJ to tour with him. This was many years ago, and I was actively djing out in the DFW area. Still hungry, still dreaming, and still anxious to scratch on records in front of a crowd. He asks if I would be interested in meeting with him to discuss the details. Today we are no closer to becoming famous musicians and performers than we were when we met all those years ago, but hey, maybe that isn’t the goal anymore.

Baker.

Charles Baker is a talented musician that has gone beyond the white rapper show and into a much more mature hip hop musician. Looking at these photos you might not think so, but trust me when I tell you the talent is there.  It’s been quite a while since we worked together on a project, but this colorful concept couldn’t have come at a much more appropriate time. It is a promotional piece for his upcoming album which I believe is titled Sugarman.

Hip hop you don’t stop.

So some people don’t stop and they won’t quit because they are too legit. I never claimed to be a rapper so take it as it is. I traveled to North Richland Hills of all places to begin the shoot, and on a whim we picked this interesting looking garage as a set. There was a fridge in there with lots of alcoholic beverages that I am sure Chuck was consuming before I arrived, and then we started to snap some photos to begin the session.

Set up.

For this session I used the Profoto B2s with the Magnum light modifier, the Profoto Silver Deep umbrella Medium, and Profoto OCF Octobox with grid, and a Profoto A1 OCF. My main cam was the Nikon D850 with a 24-70mm Nikkor lens.

100 %.

We took a variety of shots, and there were so many good ones to choose from. Overall the shoot was awesomel and I have no doubt this Sugarman concept will be successful with the fans. After all, who can say no to a blue suit lounging around the pool selling the sugar man lifestyle?
